Description
Currently the sidebar's news block provides poor user experience. The overall impression is that of a machine-generated listing with virtually no content. (The extra verbose date formatting even competes with the headlines.) The current layout will rather not attract the user's attention, and barely appeals for clicking some headline link.
Suggestion for improvement:
1) The most recent 2 or 3 news are rendered completely in the sidebar. Including images. No teasering. No "read more". Below that 5 or 6 more news links are rendered as in the current format.
There is no need for teasering and we have no space problem. All news are carefully sized. There is an upper word limit all news adheres to. This limit is due to be documented as a rule for the news editors.
2) Compact date formatting:
"Sep 2, 2010"
instead of
"Donnerstag, September 2, 2010 - 2:54PM"
1) added a news block showing 2 news completely and set the offset of the other block to start listing news beginning at n+2
this was the only solution without diving into writing a special, not trivial template for the news block and does the trick for me.
2) done
