Why do you want change this?

Our current site is made for 1280px and works very well. We decided 1280, because it allows screenshots of 800 px width (less than 800 is not readable anymore) plus ca. 240px for sidebar (less would result in too short lines). The remaining is taken by the margins (left, middle, right). All relies on intensive discussion back then and all content is carefully trimmed. We should not break this.

If you have mobile in mind: this should not compromise the current website. Instead we should use responsive design.

The pages containing screenshots (as far as I remember the latest discussion around this topic) are only present/used in the "Usage/Benutzen?" section of the site and below. And I am totally aware of that they must not "break", changes surely remain to be discussed.

Here is my idea for a compromise with the current design:
1280px is just the majority of visitors (without having stats), I got 2 times feedback on this, why this looks so mad on their screens. My goal is to maintain our design as far as possible but reduce min-width of "overall content area" to 960px, where necessary.

One approach would be to restrict usage of those kind of (_readable_) screenshots to the "usage/benutzen" section of the site. Advantage would be a completely readable frontpage and more, for e.g. users of a netbook eeepc or an (cent)iPad. It's a compromise, but better than now for sure.

To have an un-readable page/inaccessible content with a screen of just 1024px is not really acceptable from my point of view. And I wasn't thinking about this because of a mobile design or because of wanting to rewrite this plain layout to be completely responsive".

But a more responsive approach, where the sidebar generally wanders into boxes floating below the page content for smaller screens, would be another possibility but will be more effort to implement.

  • Summary changed from theme on website should support 1024px wide screen to improve info-design and theme-impl. on deepamehta website

after a chat with jri on the phone, we both agree; we should have a more sustainable, long-sighted fix of the website design, and thus, this issue;

so we now want to start to about an improved website-design based on the current which will "respond" to different screen-sizes. the following things are to be respected by an improved design;

  • rethink navigation through the site without a sidebar for screens supporting width from 900px to 1024px across all major categories (welcome, concept, usage,download, community, team); this needs to rethink access to news, plugins & project pages and e.g. publications-area
  • remove 'max-width' constraint from main content-area
  • sidebar for bigger screens seems useful

Successor of #359:

If you find something that changed and/or you don't like how it is currently styled on our site, please let me know so I can try to improve it.

Maybe we want to adapt the styling of the "Latest news"-Page (the one listing all news at https://www.deepamehta.de/de/latest-news) it looks slightly broken and could need a minor revision, esp. when looking at the:

Tell me what you think and lets keep improving our website. Thank you very much.
