There is a new version out of MathJaxRenderer? and with it just SVG Output of formulas is supported (so no IE 9 or older support). The github repo has a new description, nearly matching your suggestion on wording.
The README of the repo though needs to be updated tough, but that's another issue. Closing ticket.

The new version is available here http://download.deepamehta.de/nightly/mathjax-renderer-1.0.2.jar and compatible with DM 4.1.2.
The MathJax? Renderer is of interest for end users too, right?
No migration required. No building required.
It would be nice if the documentation make this clear.
Just type in the Renderer URI in your type's view config topic (Simple Renderer URI), right?
The first sentence of the documentation could be "DM4 MathJax? Renderer renders LaTeX in DM's detail panel."
